Google is officially rolling out its security certification standard for Android devices and apps in India. This app contains most of the features that Google offers natively in Android 4.2, as well as a basket full of other features that aren't available in the Android OS. There's a free and premium version of the security suite: the free version protects against malicious software, provides data backup and restoration, and helps locate the phone if it's misplaced.

Google's latest announcement comes five weeks after the Google Play Protect service started rolling out to Android devices all around the world, though devices labeled with its badge will run the software solution out of the box and thus feature a broad range of recently debuted mobile security functionalities like automated app scanning and other anti-malware mechanisms, Google said.

The app also attempts to prevent unauthorized users from uninstalling it. All of the app's settings can be controlled from McAfee's website (after you've registered for an account), which could prove useful if you've misplaced your device, or simply want to adjust things while you're away from it. And like most of the apps listed here, McAfee's mobile security app earned top honors on the malware detection tests, which should offer some peace of mind.

There's quite a bit more lurking under the surface: The app can help you track down a lost or stolen device by plotting its location on Google maps, track network usage statistics to weed out data hogs, and filter text messages and calls from spammers or folks you'd simply rather not talk to. If you've rooted your Android device, you can even set up a firewall to have complete control over what apps can access the Internet.
